Far fewer can tell you the same about their dry risers, fire hydrants or fire dampers, largely because these systems sit out of sight until the moment they're needed. That's the problem. Dry risers exist so the fire service can pump water directly to upper floors during a fire. Fire dampers exist to stop fire and smoke spreading through ductwork between compartments. Neither does its job if it's seized, blocked or hasn't been checked in years, and neither failure shows up in day-to-day use of the building. **Why this gets missed** These systems don't fail loudly. A dry riser with a corroded valve looks the same as a working one until someone tries to use it. A damper that won't close looks the same as one that will, right up until there's smoke in the duct behind it. Regular testing is the only way to know the difference before it matters. **What regular testing covers** - Dry risers and wet risers are pressure tested to confirm the pipework holds and the valves operate correctly. - Fire hydrants are checked for access, flow and condition, so the fire service can rely on them in an emergency. - Fire dampers are tested to confirm they close fully when triggered, cutting off the spread of fire and smoke between compartments. **Who this applies to** Larger commercial buildings, high-rise properties, industrial sites and anywhere with ductwork running between fire compartments all rely on these systems. If your building has any of them installed, they should be part of a planned testing schedule, not an afterthought.
