# Door Entry and Intercom Systems: The Security Layer Most Buildings Get Wrong

CCTV tells you what happened. Access control tells you who's inside. Door entry and intercom systems do something different again: they control who gets in at all, and that first decision point is where a lot of buildings are weaker than they realise.

**Where this usually goes wrong**

- Buzzer systems that let anyone in without properly verifying who they are, turning the intercom into a formality rather than a genuine check.
- Video entry systems installed but rarely used properly, with staff or residents buzzing people in out of habit rather than checking who's actually there.
- Communal entrances in multi-occupancy buildings where one resident letting someone in effectively grants them access for everyone.

**What a properly specified system does**

A well-designed door entry system does more than open a door. It gives whoever's answering a clear view of who's asking to come in, a straightforward way to grant or refuse access, and in many setups, a record of who came in and when. For commercial premises, that record matters for accountability. For residential blocks, it matters for peace of mind.

**Why this is worth getting right**

Door entry is often the first and most overlooked layer in a building's security. A strong CCTV and alarm setup behind a weak front door still leaves the door as the easiest way in. Getting the entry point right means everything behind it is protecting a building that was harder to get into in the first place.
